- You can cancel Amazon Prime on the website or in the mobile app in about 2 minutes.
- Amazon offers two options: End Now (possible refund) and End at Period End (keep benefits, no refund).
- If you haven't used Prime benefits this billing period, cancelling immediately may get you a prorated refund.
- Prime Video is available as a standalone subscription — a cheaper option if streaming is all you need.
Cancel on the Amazon Website
The Amazon website is the most straightforward place to cancel. The process is the same whether you're on a monthly or annual plan.
- Go to amazon.com and sign in to your account.
- Hover over Account & Lists in the top right, then click Your Account.
- Click Prime — or navigate directly to amazon.com/gp/primecentral.
- Click Manage membership on the left side.
- Click End membership.
- Amazon will show you two options — choose one (see below).
At step 6, Amazon presents a clear choice between ending now and ending at the period end. Read the next section before making this choice — the difference matters.
Cancel in the Amazon App
You can also cancel directly from the Amazon shopping app on your phone.
- Open the Amazon app on your phone.
- Tap the three horizontal lines (menu icon) in the bottom right.
- Tap Your Account.
- Tap Manage Prime Membership.
- Follow the same flow as the web — choose End Now or End at Period End.
End Immediately vs. End at Period End
This is the most important decision in the cancellation flow. Amazon gives you a clear choice:
End membership now — Your Prime benefits stop immediately. If you haven't used Prime Video, Prime shipping, or other benefits during the current billing period, Amazon will typically offer a prorated or full refund to your original payment method.
End membership at period end — You keep all Prime benefits until your next billing date. No refund is issued, but you get everything you've already paid for. This is the better option if you're late in your billing cycle and have been actively using Prime.
Amazon's Refund Policy for Prime
Amazon's refund eligibility depends on usage. Here's how it generally works:
- No benefits used this period: Amazon typically refunds the full or prorated amount when you end immediately.
- Benefits used this period: No refund — you get access until the end of your billing period.
- Annual plan: If you're on an annual plan and cancel early in the year without having used benefits, Amazon may refund the remaining months.
- Free trial: Cancelling before a free trial converts costs nothing — no charge was made.
Amazon determines benefit usage based on Prime Video streams, Prime-eligible deliveries, and other Prime perks. If you're unsure, the cancellation screen itself will tell you whether a refund is available.
Benefits That End When You Cancel
Amazon Prime bundles a lot of services. Here's what you lose when your membership ends:
- Prime Video — streaming access to the Prime Video library
- Free 2-day shipping — and other Prime shipping benefits
- Prime Reading — access to the rotating Kindle book library
- Prime Music — ad-supported streaming (the basic tier, separate from Music Unlimited)
- Amazon Fresh / Whole Foods discounts — Prime pricing at Whole Foods and Fresh delivery perks
- Prime Gaming — free monthly games and in-game content
- Prime Day access — exclusive deals event for members
Prime Video as a Standalone Option
If the only Prime benefit you actually use is Prime Video, it's worth knowing that Amazon offers a Prime Video standalone subscription at a lower price than full Prime membership.
The standalone plan gives you access to the full Prime Video streaming library but does not include free shipping, Prime Reading, Prime Music, or any other Prime perks. If you're cancelling Prime mainly to save money but still want to watch shows, this is worth considering before you cancel outright.
To find it: when you go through the cancellation flow, Amazon often surfaces this option as an alternative to full cancellation.
